School closings due to
weather conditions


The decision to close schools is often a difficult one to make. Generally, it is not considered wise to dismiss schools once they start. Many working parents are not prepared to receive children early, so safety becomes a major concern.  We are very mindful of this and will only make a decision to close schools when weather conditions create a risk to the safety of our students and staff.


Making the Decision

Here are some primary factors district officials consider when making a decision to close schools:

  • Safety and well-being of students
  • Severity of the weather and duration of the severity
  • The ability of buses and cars to travel safely.
The superintendent and district officials monitor the National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts and use that information to determine if weather conditions warrant closings schools for that day.  The decision to close schools is made by 6:00 a.m. of that day, and not the day or evening before.  District officials wait as long as possible to have the most current weather report and updates from NWS before making a decision.



Notifying Families

If weather conditions are extreme to a point where a decision is made to close schools, the district will notify families as soon as possible through:

  • Phone calls and email
  • Announcement on local news channels
  • District website
  • Social media (Facebook and Twitter)

In case on inclement weather, parents may personally decide not to let their children come to school.  Children absent in inclement weather when schools are open will be marked absent and the absence will be treated the same as in any other legitimate absences.  The school must however receive proper notice of the child's absence. In case of inclement weather, parents may also pick up their children from school anytime during the day.  We will not dismiss students upon phone request.

Please remember: Schools will remain open unless you receive a message from the district through the communication avenues listed above.

Northwest Suburban Integration School District (NWSISD)

Students enrolled through the Northwest Suburban Integration School District (NWSISD): If the district you reside in closes school, there will be no transportation for that day to Fridley Public Schools.  If the district that you reside in delays school due to poor weather conditions, there will be no morning bus service to Fridley on that day.

Please remember to clear out all items from the locker rooms BEFORE June 6th at 3. It does not matter if you are doing a summer activity, ALL lockers must be empty or locks will be cut and leftover items will be thrown or donated.

The final film club event is two weeks away - Everyone is welcome to come and see Godzilla: King of the Monsters to celebrate our seniors graduating and finishing the school year. Talk to Mr. Haaheim or Valentae Morehead to secure your ticket!

To celebrate the end of the year, all items in the Tiger Store will be half priced between now and the end of the year. Remember, the store is open Tuesday and Thursday during one lunch. Turn in any earned tickets to your advisory teacher!

On Tuesday, June 4, all returning JV and Varsity VB players should attend a one hour classroom practice. Meet in Gym room 55 (Mr. Anderson’s room) from 3:15-4:15.

All girls interested in playing on the tennis team next fall please attend an informational meeting Wed, May 29th first half of lunch in room 119 to learn about uniforms, summer tennis camp and season details. See Mr. Branitski if you cannot attend.

If you attended any of our meetings this year or participated in Culture Week, then you are invited to our end of the year meeting this Thursday 5/23 during the first half of lunch in Room 144 (Ms Sneider’s room). FPS Superintendent Dr. Hiel will be there to share her thoughts. See Mr. Haaheim, Mr. Holt, Mr. Branitski, Mr. Leistikow, Ms. Phelps, or Ms. Sneider if you have any questions.

Caps and gowns will be distributed during one-lunch in the media center on Thursday, May 23. In order to receive your cap and gown you MUST first complete the senior survey in your Dean’s Google Classroom AND have all of your outstanding fees paid in the office.

We do not allow meal charging in May. Please check to be sure you have money in your account before getting lunch. If you need help, just ask. We are here to help with any circumstance.
