School closings due to
weather conditions

The decision to close schools is often a difficult one to make. Generally, it is not considered wise to dismiss schools once they start. Many working parents are not prepared to receive children early, so safety becomes a major concern.  We are very mindful of this and will only make a decision to close schools when weather conditions create a risk to the safety of our students and staff.

Making the Decision

Here are some primary factors district officials consider when making a decision to close schools:

  • Safety and well-being of students
  • Severity of the weather and duration of the severity
  • The ability of buses and cars to travel safely.
The superintendent and district officials monitor the National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts and use that information to determine if weather conditions warrant closings schools for that day.  The decision to close schools is made by 6:00 a.m. of that day, and not the day or evening before.  District officials wait as long as possible to have the most current weather report and updates from NWS before making a decision.

Notifying Families

If weather conditions are extreme to a point where a decision is made to close schools, the district will notify families as soon as possible through:

  • Phone calls and email
  • Announcement on local news channels
  • District website
  • Social media (Facebook and Twitter)

In case on inclement weather, parents may personally decide not to let their children come to school.  Children absent in inclement weather when schools are open will be marked absent and the absence will be treated the same as in any other legitimate absences.  The school must however receive proper notice of the child's absence. In case of inclement weather, parents may also pick up their children from school anytime during the day.  We will not dismiss students upon phone request.

Please remember: Schools will remain open unless you receive a message from the district through the communication avenues listed above.

Northwest Suburban Integration School District (NWSISD)

Students enrolled through the Northwest Suburban Integration School District (NWSISD): If the district you reside in closes school, there will be no transportation for that day to Fridley Public Schools.  If the district that you reside in delays school due to poor weather conditions, there will be no morning bus service to Fridley on that day.
