Elementary Targeted Services/Learning Academy

Targeted Services is a program offered at Hayes and Stevenson Elementary that is designed to supplement the traditional school day. The role of Targeted Services is to identify students who may be at risk, either academically or socially and emotionally and to provide specific interventions that will meet the whole learner. The intent of Targeted Services is to also be purposeful, with the ultimate goal being to give students enrolled the assets, strengths, and protective factors they need to be successful in school.

Students at Hayes or Stevenson can be enrolled in after school Targeted Services if they qualify for an intervention as stated by the Minnesota Department of Education. The program focus is not solely remedial; other qualifications include:

  • social and emotional learning
  • providing differentiated instruction for students 
  • linking the content delivered to in school curriculum 
  • play-based learning 
  • project-based learning

Classes offered for Session Two - Hayes Elementary School


Class: Busy Builders

Teacher: Armstrong

Day: Monday

Grades: 1 & 2

Calling all builders! Learn how to follow step-by-step directions to build all sorts of Lego creations. Students will work on math and STEM skills and having a growth mindset. Students will also complete a few Lego STEM challenges throughout the semester.

Class: Introduction to Coding

Teacher: Rouzer

Day: Wednesday

Grades: 2, 3, & 4

Students will explore basic coding concepts through the use of Code.org, other websites, unplugged activities, and even simple robots! Coding helps develop the life-long skills of perseverance, problem solving, and computational thinking.

This class will target the development of basic technology skills as well as an understanding math concepts and programming.



Class: Math Mania

Teacher: Fischer

Day: Monday and Wednesday

Grades: 4

In this math class, students will focus on math strategies that will allow them success in their everyday math endeavors. Students will practice these strategies in small group and activity based instruction with the overall goal of achieving math proficiency in many of the math skills related to their classroom math instruction.

 

Class: Read Naturally

Teacher: Weingart

Day: Tuesday

Grade: 2

Read Naturally is a great program for students who need to increase reading fluency.  During this time they will be introduced to new vocabulary, practice reading quickly, and learn how to minimize the errors they have at their individual reading level.

This class will focus on increasing Oral Reading Fluency scores which will allow students to gain confidence in their reading abilities.

**This class is teacher referral based. Ms. Weingart will reach out to families regarding enrollment in this class. If you have any questions, please call Karin Beckstrand at 763-502-5117.

Grade: 3 & 4

Through Games

In this interactive and engaging class, students will be learning and using games that incorporate math skills and strategies such as Cribbage, Monopoly, Catan, Chess, and more. The goal of this class is to allow students to practice a growth mindset and to interact with each other through playing games that will practice and challenge theri math and reasoning skills.



Class: Theater Fun

Teacher: Elaraby

Day: Tuesday and Thursday

Grades: 2, 3, & 4

Students will be reading and writing plays as well as developing their own writing and acting skills.

This class will focus on the development of reading fluency, reading skills, and writing skills through the use of plays and Reader’s Theater.



Session Two

  • Registration is open January 7 - January 22, 9:00 am deadline
  • Classes will run January 28 - May 2
  • Please note that this schedule differs from the Parks and Rec after school programs
  • Transportation information will be emailed by January 25
  • Class confirmations will be sent home by January 25

  • You may consult your child’s classroom teacher if you have questions regarding the classes and if the class would benefit your child.
  • Class descriptions are provided.
  • Students may be enrolled in more than one class as long as the classes do NOT overlap on days.
  • Students with teacher referrals will receive priority.

On a mission to fight pollution, Stevenson kindergarten students kicked off a school-wide initiative as they 'saved seeds' on January 11, 2019.

Congratulations to Fridley Public Schools January 2019 Employee of the Month, Lisa Schloegl, paraprofessional at Stevenson Elementary.

Fridley Middle School 7th and 8th grade students enjoyed the "Gopher Experience" on December 7, 2018 - a program for middle school students to visit campus to learn from U of M student athletes.
