Fridley Public Schools recognized and honored its volunteers at the seventh annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on May 10, 2018. These volunteers dedicate their time and energy to supporting Fridley students by spending time in classrooms, donating resources, and much more.

Across the district, more than 140 volunteers support students, teachers and programs in various ways that greatly benefit and enhance student learning experiences throughout the year.

“Volunteers truly give from the heart,” Fridley Public Schools Superintendent Peggy Flathmann said. “Here at Fridley Public Schools, we are so lucky to have so many people who choose to support our district by lending a helping hand. We want to thank each and every one of you for all that you give to our students.”

Steve Klaers, a frequent volunteer throughout the district, had children who went through the Fridley Public School system. Klaers is now involved with the Fridley-Columbia Heights Rotary Club, a big advocate for scholarships in the district. He assists with a highly effective scholarship program called STRIVE (Students Taking a Renewed Interest in the Values of Education), as well as a junior achievement program at the high school.

“The takeaway for me is the smiles and just the grateful interchange that you get from some of the kids,” said Klaers. “Sometimes it doesn’t come right away, but you can sense the amount of appreciation from these kids after the program is over. It’s pretty hard to put a dollar value on something like that, so it’s very meaningful. I’m glad that I do it.”

Doug Haugland and Sue Kozarek are frequent volunteers at Stevenson Elementary School. Haugland is a former teacher with the district, working at Hayes, Riverwood, Fridley Middle School and Stevenson.

“Since I retired, I just automatically thought that I still want to be involved in the school system,” Haugland said. “So for the last 15 years, I’ve been able to volunteer and help out.”

Both Haugland and Kozarek assist with many tasks at Stevenson, including filling Wednesday folders, helping with the kindergarten buddy program, making copies, and anything that teachers need help with.

From tutoring students and chaperoning on field trips to working as sports boosters and manning the concessions at sporting events, fundraising for schools and supporting students and families with much needed supplies, volunteers cover a number of jobs both inside and outside the classroom.

Fridley Public Schools would like to thank all its wonderful volunteers! We deeply appreciate your generosity and commitment to the success of our students!
