Principal's Message
I hope you and your family are healthy and doing well during this extremely challenging time. We would never have expected or asked to end our school year in this way. We miss seeing our scholars every day and cannot wait to see them again.
I hope that distance learning is going smoothly for your families. Our scholars seem to have settled into some routine with engaging with their work. Please continue to remind students to check into homeroom daily for attendance purposes and to follow the daily schedule for their grade level to engage in their google classrooms. Also, continue to check our FMS Distance Learning Site regularly. You can access learning and up-to-date information about FMS. It can be accessed by clicking here or the link below.
Please remember we are here for you during this difficult time. If there is anything we can do to support you and your family, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher or any of our student support service staff. All of the contact information for staff can be found on the FMS Distance Learning site. We want to do everything we can to support you and our scholars.
We appreciate your continued partnership. Distance learning takes us partnering together to ensure our students will continue to grow and learn even in the face of adversity. Thank you for all you are doing.
Please take care! Go Tigers!

Feedback from students
Grading for 2nd Semester
Fridley Public Schools has developed a grading procedure for students for Semester 2 of the 2019-20 school year. Many factors were considered when determining grading procedures, including:
Meeting the various needs of elementary, middle school, high school, and ALC students;
The need to communicate student progress and learning;
The desire to encourage students to strive for excellence, even during this challenging time; and
The recognition that distance learning has amplified the already existing inequity in student access and opportunity.
These guidelines were made with input from the Minnesota Department of Education, survey data from metro area school districts, discussions with principals, IB Coordinators and other curriculum leaders, input from teachers, parents, and students.
Middle School Students:
No changes will be made to Campus for grading so parents can continue to monitor their students progress by looking at parent portal.
Changes will only be made on the final report card to indicate P (Pass) or NA (Not Assessed).
Any student who had scores of 1-8 in criteria before distance learning started will earn a P (Pass).
NA (Not Assessed) will be given to students who had zero evidence when distance learning began and did not or could not engage with distance learning.
The report card will include notation indicating these scores were earned during distance learning.
Please reach out to your students teachers, dean of students or the main office at 763-502-5400 if you have any questions regarding grading.

8th Grade Information
We know that the end of middle school marks a very special time as students will soon begin their journey into high school. We usually celebrate this day with a formal assembly acknowledging our students. Unfortunately, this year we will be unable to do this celebration as usual. With that, we are looking for ideas for celebrating our 8th graders at the end of the school year! If you have ideas, please email Mrs. Haley (haley@isd14.org) or Ms. G (gruhlke@isd14.org). We will definitely do something to honor and acknowledge all of their hard work. Stay tuned for more information.
National History Day Winners!
Congratulations to Fridley Middle School 8th grade students Emily Duba and Britney Merchan, who qualified for the National History Day in Minnesota statewide competition which was held virtually on May 2nd! At the statewide competition they placed 2nd! Way to go!
The 2nd place statewide finish that Duba and Merchan earned has now qualified them for the National History Day Contest, where they are competing among the best History Day projects in the entire United States! The National History Day Contest will take place virtually in June. Best of luck, Emily and Britney!
Duba and Merchan's exhibit project, "Loving v. Virginia; Breaking the Marriage Barrier," centered around the 1967 historic, landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down laws banning interracial marriage.
